Dear Industry Executive,

Policing Call TV: set to have a massive impact on next gen mobile services?

The Big Brother racism furore was in many ways the last straw. Up until the point where it looked that Channel 4 and programme maker Endemol could be about to make millions from the votes to get Jade kicked out — in other words profiting from racism on TV — Call TV had seen its reputation sink steadily. Big Brother broke the camel’s back.

And now call TV is back in the headlines, with premium rate services regulator ICSTIS offering its proposals for tightening up call and participation TV rules following, not the Big Brother issue per se, but the growing fear that many call TV services — especially the quizzes — are in fact a rip off.

ICSTIS has long been worried about this ever more profitable sector, where viewers call or text a premium rate line with the answer to a very simple question. One lucky winner is then pulled out and wins a prize. The model has been used to fund programmes and has even spawned whole late night TV channels.

The problem is that most callers and texters don’t get through. It is in fact a lottery. And, in ICSTIS view, it needs to be policed as such.

ICSTIS’ proposals include making viewers aware of their actual chances of being put through to the studio and giving participants cumulative call cost warnings after each £10 they spend.

These are only proposals at the moment, but a whole tranche of the mobile-TV-internet convergence market’s future hangs in the balance. These quiz services are the tip of what is shaping up to me a mighty iceberg. It will be interesting to see how it pans out through 2007.

Yours

Mobile messaging set to drive UGC and pro-sumer content spend

Mobile messaging — namely instant messaging (IM), email and even MMS — are increasingly looking like key services for driving mobile revenues, especially among the pro-sumer and older consumer market,  but also for helping to build mobile community and user generated content services. And many companies are looking to cash in on a market that Analysys believes will be worth E26billion by 2010.

Bouygues Telecom, Ten, O2, Cellcom, Cosmote, KPN, Starhub and Fareastone are all rolling out IM services, largely based on Miyowa’s platform. Italian operator Wind is also poised to offer IM using the same platform to its i-Mode customers early next month. And all are hoping that

Many players in the market now believe that Instant Messaging is the ideal hub to offer innovative and varied products, which will be generated and widely shared by end-users’ communities,” says Pascal Lorne, Chief Executive Officer of Miyowa.

Technology company Colibria is banking on IM being central to rolling out mobile blogging and citizen journalism by introducing an image-share application to its industry-leading MIM (mobile instant messaging) portfolio.

‘IM-Photoblog’ is an operator community MIM service extension that enables subscribers to send their own photos and sound files and add text to create a Mobile IM enabled blog. The application adds an exciting multi-media dimension to the mobile IM community experience.

Mobile media publishers MoMac is providing a fully hosted and managed service for T-Mobile, with the service being offered to all T-Mobile’s t-zone subscribers on MoMac’s Gomedia mobile publishing platform.

Orange UK trials Java based location content search tool

UK operator Orange UK is sponsoring a trial of location-based content search specialist m-spatial’s new Java version of the Orange Local mobile search and discovery service. The trial, which began in December 2006, is comparing consumer reactions to the differing user experiences provided by the existing Orange Local browser-based service and the new Java service.

“The success of the Orange Local service in the UK and its incredible value in encouraging consumer adoption of mobile data has confirmed mobile local search as a strategic priority for the business,” says Steve Ricketts, Orange UK. “By partnering with m-spatial on this trial we expect to generate a wealth of usage and behavioural information which will be used to ensure we continue to deliver the most compelling and intuitive service to our customers.”

Built on m-spatial’s Local Search and Discovery Engine (LSDE), the browser based version of Orange Local was launched at the beginning of 2006. Downloadable onto the mobile from the Orange World portal, m-spatial’s new Java service builds on the LSDE technology, offering users additional functionality including the ability to smoothly pan and zoom around a map-based view of local services.

“With ever increasing numbers of handsets being Java enabled, the time is right to uniquely combine the benefits of a Java-based user interface with live access to a wealth of local content,” said Andy Walker, CEO of m-spatial. “We continue to drive mobile local search forward, taking advantage of the increasing sophistication of mobile handsets to deliver state-of-the-art services to consumers. Today’s announcement is testament to our commitment to innovation in delivering the best possible user experience and we are delighted to have extended our relationship with Orange UK.”

Mobile ticketing explodes in Nottingham’s Detonate Club

Last Friday night saw the roll out of the World’s first end-to-end all mobile ticketing solution being used for a pay to enter event. Detonate (www.detonate1.co.uk), celebrating its eight anniversary as Nottingham’s biggest underground student clubnight saw thousands of clubber’s purchasing tickets directly via their mobile phone – and receiving their ticket on their mobile for secure and fast scanning at point of entry.

Clubbers’ simply text the key word DETONATE to telecoms technology company Trinity’s platform via the shortcode 2500 to buy tickets for the night. A WAP based ticket purchase session is then initiated where credit/debit card details are entered that is as fast, secure and efficient as a web based purchase. Tickets can also be purchased from the Detonate web site and will then be sent directly to the mobile phone. Handheld and kiosk scanners are sited at the entrance to verify the  barcoded tickets for fast and easy entry.

This is the first time outside of Japan that full end-to-end mobile ticket purchase and redemption has been possible and used live at a major event. Previously “free” tickets have been used or tickets have been bought via a web site but the full process has never been possible on the phone.

Mobile Ticketing is set to grow tremendously here in the UK as well as overseas and is projected to be worth an estimated $34 billion by 2009 according to Jupiter Research.
