Dear Industry Executive
Is the mobile content industry targeting the wrong people?
A
study carried out by handset maker Sony Ericsson has found,
unsurprisingly, that 53 per cent of UK adults work on the move, with 13
per cent doing so on a daily basis.
The key driver to this is
that technology — laptops, Wi-Fi and mobiles — allow people to be more
flexible in how and where they work. So is the mobile content industry
missing a trick?
Mobile email and proper mobile web access —
not to mention mobilising software such as MS Office programs — are
what these guys are crying out for and, while there is an ever growing
buzz around delivering ‘boring’ content and services that meet the
needs of the growing number of pro-sumers, not a great deal as moved in
this area.
The problem, it seems, is cost. Employers are no
longer prepared to subsidise mobile workers use of content and services
on mobile, often instigating a blanket ban to stop employees using
company devices to access expensive content services for fun.
But
with the groundswell in demand from an ever more remote-working
populace, surely it is time that someone in the content and services
market looked beyond selling stuff to teenagers and really explored how
to tap the pro-sumer market and moreover how to make their paymasters
cough up for things that really could help business.
Yours

Cutting edge video services are clogging up networks and hampering content uptake
Consumers'
increasing appetite for video, interactive gaming and high-speed
Internet services is placing huge demands on fixed and mobile networks
and runs the risk of crashes, packet loss and incomplete transactions,
which could have a detrimental effect on the roll out of everything
from community mobile services to games and music downloads — all
fledgling markets.
According to figures published by telecoms
network solution provider Tellabs, downloading one minute of video
takes four times the network capacity than downloading one minute of
music. Uploading a video clip from a mobile phone takes five times the
network capacity of one minute of talk. HDTV uses five times more
bandwidth than standard TV.
Similar issues have plagued the
fixed line internet, with many content providers turning to the likes
of PacketExchange to build what is being dubbed Internet 2.0,
dedicated, non-VPN internet networks to allow for the delivery of
content online and increasingly via the mobile internet.
Industry
watchers fear that failures now in delivering the right kind of user
experience could have a huge impact on developing mobile content
services, especially the ‘next generation’ of video and TV content
based ones.

LaNetro purchase of MonsterMob signals much needed consolidation in mobile content space
The battle to buy D2C content
company MonsterMob has been won by Spain’s LaNetro Zed with a bid for
£34million. The purchase turns LaNetro Zed in to what is thought to be
the largest mobile value added services (MVAS) company in Europe, with
1200 staff and operations in 31 countries worldwide.
The move,
which was widely welcomed by LaNetro’s board, but which saw
MonsterMob’s share price drop at the news of the take-over last thing
last week, shows how the mobile content and services market is
beginning a much needed round of consolidation.
The content
market has been tipped to be a multi-billion dollar industry by
analysts and insiders, but has largely failed so far to gain the
consumer base it was tipped to attract. Consequently, with visions of
parallels to the dotcom collapse, the industry is boxing clever by
consolidating.
Spanish multinational Zed has been one of the
leading players in the global MVAS market over the last three years
whilst MonsterMob has built a strong portfolio of businesses across the
world’s largest and highest growth markets. Zed has recently
invested over Euro 50 million in the development of the world’s first
internet 2.0-based platform, bringing user-generated content, social
networking and communication tools to a new integrated mobile and PC
environment. Together the two companies will dominate a global
industry.
“MonsterMob’s shareholders have recognised that
LaNetro Zed’s offer is best placed to move the business forward, for
the benefit of all shareholders, from a firmer financial foundation,”
says Javier Perez Dolset, Chairman and Chief Executive of Zed. “This is
a strategically important investment for LaNetro Zed as it will allow
us to exploit opportunities in markets where MonsterMob has built a
strong business including China, USA, Russia and the UK.”

Combined Skype and landline phone launched — could it be a new channel for content?Downloading
content to VoIP phones over services such as Skype have taken a step
closer with the launch of the MAX-DECT dual phone for Skype and
landlines, which not only allows users to make phone calls either over
a landline or via their PC using Skype, but it also features a colour
screen.
So what? You may well ask, but since late last year
companies have identified the growth in IP based telephony as a
potential new market to boost the ringtone, logo and basic mobile
content market. This new phone could, it is believed, allow for the
delivery of premium content such as ringtones and ringback tones when
connected to Skype. The telephone come with Caller ID, an integrated
directory and 10 polyphonic ring tones to choose from, and allows calls
from specified numbers to be blocked, says manufacturers Maxfield.
Back
in February last year, Ministry of Sound teamed up with content
provider Qpass — now part of Amdocs — to offer MoS branded content to
Skype users as part of the IP carrier’s Personalise Skype service. At
the time this was tipped as being a massive new market for mobile
content services outside the traditional mobile channel. The arrival of
this handset helps that on its way.

O2 gives unsigned musicians a boost Bolstering
the links between mobile and music, aspiring musicians are about to get
a boost from network operator O2, which is using Mobile Interactive
Group to offer SMS voting for O2’s undiscovered bands competition
taking place in March.
Launched at the end of January, the
competition to find the UK’s hottest unsigned band will see the
hopefuls whittled down to 30, all of which will be downloadable. MIG
will then offer voting services for the great British public to select
the finalists who will perform in front of an expert panel of judges
comprising Andy Taylor from Duran Duran, DJ Spoony and Music Week’s
Talent Editor Stuart Clarke.
An SMS vote will take place for the
public to select their winner. The winner of the O2 Undiscovered chart
will get a wildcard to take part in the final in April in London, where
the eleven finalists will perform in front of the prestigious O2
Undiscovered panel. The spectacular finale will see the winner
performing at the O2 Wireless Festival, which takes in June 07.
Nuala
Donnelly, O2 Sponsorship says that: “O2 Undiscovered is highly thought
of within the industry and is a great opportunity for undiscovered
talent to come to the fore. This is the second year O2 will be
running this event and we’re committed to delivering a monitoring
programme with a focus on developing the musically gifted and I’m sure
2007 will prove to be another tremendously successful year.”

New mobile technology set to spur on content servicesA
technology combining the convenience of text messaging with the content
of the internet launches this week; making a new generation of mobile
phone services possible, claims developer iOTA Sphere. Its
patent-pending technology provides both content providers and mobile
network operators with a new easy-to-use, enduring, attractive consumer
application to maximise data revenues. “To capitalise on
mobile data services you need to retain the interest of the mobile user
first”, says iOTA Sphere’s Managing Director, Bruce Eley. “We have
witnessed many attempts to replace the mobile browser, yet the
declining number of users clearly shows that the formula is not yet
right. Whilst growth in data services is still largely attributed to
SMS”. iOTA Sphere’s on-device services brings the SMS
experience to data services with a distinct focus on usability.
On-Device Services retain the user’s interest by providing a fast,
simple experience that enables service reuse with responses viewable
offline.
“This technology has the potential to attract and
retain large subscriber bases even with people who have never used the
mobile internet, because of its focus on usability and keeping the user
interface familiar,” Eley suggests.
