Dear Industry Executive,
A message from our sponsors?
For
many months, advertising has been talked about as something that
content companies and mobile operators should be looking at. Six months
ago, no one really knew how they should be looking at it, only that it
was important. Today, we are starting to see where advertising fits in
— and it could well be one of the most important drivers of the mobile
content market.
Plans to effectively subside the download of
over the air music services by adding targeted and interactive
advertising to music services (see top story this week) shows that, as
with the start up days of commercial TV, advertising is necessary to
supplement or even supplant consumer cash when accessing expensive data
services.
Last week we pointed out that costly MNO data charges
were stifling the growth of content services. This week we see the
beginnings of a solution — regardless of what the operators decide to
do about data prices, advertising could well save the day.
But
is it such a great idea? I for one get sick of the ads on commercial TV
channels: sick to the point that, where possible, I record everything
on Sky+ so I can fast forward through the ads. Mobile might be
different — certainly to start with — as it might, just might, attract
some clever, watchable advertising. After all, the pinnacle of mobile
advertising is targeted, viral content that, while being an ad is
watchable content in its own right. Only if they pull this off, will
mobile ads — and perhaps the mobile content market it could support —
take off.
Yours

Ad-funding deal could make mobile music more appealing
Help
may be at hand for the stalling mobile music market. Mobile music
solutions provider SDC has partnered Amobee Media Systems to enable new
advertising revenues for operators and record labels from over the air
mobile music downloads. This means that, rather than the user bearing
the whole cost of the music download — perceived as the biggest barrier
to over the air downloads — adverts can be used to supplement the costs. The
partnership with Amobee, announced at MIDEM in Cannes this week,
provides SDC’s white label Java, Symbian and Brew music players the
ability to be serve contextual and targeted opt-in advertising
impressions without affecting the mobile music listening experience.
SDC
has integrated Amobee’s HAPI (Handset Application Programming
Interface), a small SDK file that enables the DRM music players to
receive ads from Amobee’s purpose built mobile ad-server.
‘‘Over
the last several years the music industry has engaged with the mobile
industry to create a new music experience, whoever, the user bears the
full weight of payment – a situation that will ultimately stifles
growth. Ad-funding the mobile music business has the potential to
create new revenue streams for operators and record labels while
delivering an innovative, targeted and measurable advertising channel
for brands,” says Zohar Levkovitz, CEO of Amobee Media Systems. “We
look forward to ad-funding the SDC music service technology and provide
additional revenues for its operator customers.”

ITV launches mobile coupon-based interactive advertising initiative
UK broadcaster ITV has become the
first broadcaster to exclusively launch a brand new interactive service
that allows advertisers and retailers to send mobile coupons to TV
viewers which can then be redeemed at High Street retail outlets
through existing scenning and chip and PIN machines — which covers 70
per cent of today’s high street.
The service and technology,
created by mobile specialist Eagle Eye Solutions, is the first of its
type to be launched by a broadcaster and offers both brands and
retailers the ability to link their advertising spend directly to sales
generated, via the sales data provided by the coupon system.
ITV
fully expects that the signing of this partnership will revolutionise
the way that brands and retailers advertise and interact with their
customers through traditional ITV routes and are currently looking for
retail partners to join the service.
Peter Manten, Head of
Interactive Sales at ITV says “This is a fantastic opportunity for
advertisers and retailers alike to open a direct dialogue with their
customers in a simple, manageable and cost-effective way. The
initiative will provide advertisers with instant ROI data, retailers
with footfall instore and customers with instantly redeemable offers.
Eagle Eye Solutions have provided us with a unique software platform
that makes this possible in a very easy to implement and cost effective
way.”
Julian Reiter, Eagle Eye Solutions Managing Director
adds “Where a till or chip and pin machine is normally used to
take a credit card or debit card payment, we have created a platform
that allows a till operator to redirect the till at the press of a
button from the banks to our databases, allowing the till to redeem the
coupon in real time.”

Private expects 130m more handsets to be getting its adult services in Q107 Adult
entertainment company Private Media Group says that its mobile business
is expected to grow in reach by 130 million handsets to 674 million in
2007, following the addition of 12 new carriers of its mobile content
in 12 countries, including eight new territories: Japan, Argentina,
Canada, Hong Kong, Columbia, Ecuador, Sweden and Finland.
“We
are currently the dominant adult content provider in Europe: the focus
for 2007 will be on developing incremental distribution in the Asia
Pacific region and Latin America.” says Tim Clausen, Private’s Director
of Mobile Operations. “We are in a strong strategic position to further
grow our mobile business in this area. It is important to understand
that this expected growth is not only coming from carriers where we
will go live, but also from those where we have existing distribution.”
Juniper
Research expect the worldwide mobile adult content market to be worth
$3.3bn by 2011, up from its current level of $1.4bn. Europe is
considered the most lucrative market, according to the Juniper study,
with the Asia Pacific region the next most valuable to the industry. A
total of $14.5bn in revenue is expected to be generated by the adult
mobile content sector over the next five years with Europe accounting
for 39 per cent revenue over this period. The study estimates that
video-based services will account for over 70 per cent of revenue in
the mobile adult content market by 2011.

4th Screen Advertising becomes first mobile ad agency to join Internet Advertising Bureau UK 4th
Screen Advertising, the UK based mobile advertising agency and sister
company to Mobile Interactive Group (MIG), has become the first mobile
agency to join the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) – the UK online
advertising trade body. As its first mobile agency member,
the appointment represents the increased focus the IAB intends to place
on mobile marketing over the coming year and beyond. As members
of the IAB, 4th Screen Advertising plan to collaborate on
research-based projects to promote a greater knowledge and
understanding of the mobile market for UK brands, media buyers, mobile
media owners and operators. “Although there is no
doubt that mobile advertising will be a significant advertising channel
going forward, there still remains a significant challenge to educate
brands to the opportunities in mobile,” Mark Slade, MD, 4th Screen
Advertising tells ContentFutures. “By working with the IAB we hope to
leverage their experience in helping to grow a new digital channel. My
self and my team are looking forward to working closely with the IAB
over the coming year. “ Guy Phillipson, CEO, IAB adds
that: “We are dedicated to keeping our members and UK advertisers up to
date with all the latest industry research as well as insights into
consumer behaviour and attitudes, so extending our remit into the
mobile advertising arena would be the most logical step.”

The MySpace generation expands social networking to mobileTeenagers
are expanding their social networking to mobile, with Italian and UK
kids leading the world in using mobile photo-messaging, video
messaging, IM, chat, dating and other forms of user generated content
(UGC).
According to the latest monthly statistics from mobile
market statisticians M:Metrics, phone-to-phone photo messaging is the
most popular category of user-generated content, with between 19.9 per
cent of American, and 49.9 per cent of Italian teens reporting they
sent a photo to another phone in the month of October.
Sharing
videos captured by a mobile phone also proved to be popular. Again,
Italy ranked first in video messaging among teens at 25 per cent in the
month of October, followed by Spain, at 20.9 per cent, United Kingdom
at 20 per cent, France at 15 per cent, Germany at 11.7 per cent and the
United States at 6.3 per cent.
"Much as teens were the early
adopters of PC-based social networking applications, they have proven
to be the innovators in the mobile arena," said Paul Goode, vice
president and senior analyst, M:Metrics. "Although teenagers and young
adults make up only six to 10 per cent of mobile subscribers, they
generate more than their fair share of mobile content."
