Welcome to the Newsletter
2007- The Year of User Generated Content?
Welcome to the first edition of ContentFutures.com, a weekly analysts newsletter brought to you by Juniper Research. Each week we will be taking a look at the key stories in mobile content from around the world and offering comment and analysis of what the stories mean for the industry. Plus:
- Comment and analysis of what the latest news means for the industry
- Key upcoming industry events from around the world
- The latest industry job placements
- Marketplace listings
We kick off this week with a look at probably the hottest topic for 2007: user generated content (UGC) services. Having already made it big online — vis a vis Utube, MySpace and a host of others — the mobile content community has not been slow to explore whether UGC could be the cash cow for the year.
Unsurprisingly, the adult sector is leading the way, having pioneered UGC in print media many years ago. The attraction of UGC is obvious: for any service provider it is free content — being generated by the user — that can then be sold, with a small cut going to the generator.
“Adult is the obvious area for mobile UGC,” says consultant Craig Barrack from Mobile Networking. ‘No one is going to pay to watch a skateboarding dog clip on their mobile.”
Others disagree seeing mobile UGC as being something that is open to both adult and mainstream markets. “Mobile tariffs are ideal for UGC,” says Jeremy Flynn, ex-Vodafone, now running mobile video company D2See. “The opportunity it to see that the mobile is both a content generation device and the consumption device.” Yours

User Generated Content Set to be Next Big Thing in Adult Services
Activefone, a mobile interactive services specialist, has signed up adult brands Relish and Candywall for its user-generated-content (UGC) services using momo, the world's first white label, cross-network, user generated content and social networking community platform.
The adult industry has long been a pioneer of user generated content dating back to Readers Wives and with millions of picture and video enabled mobile phones on the market it's never been easier for people to create and make money from their own X rated content.
Award-winning adult production company Relish Films has been quick to see the massive revenue potential represented by UGC and has signed a long term agreement to use momo to launch the first adult service for uploading and downloading user-generated adult pictures and videos for mobile and Web.
Candywall, one of the UK's largest providers of adult chat services has also signed up to momo to integrate UGC solutions across its flagship brand www.adultchat.co.uk to provide additional revenue streams and increase loyalty.
Mark Watts, COO, Activefone commented: “The adult sector and user generated content have always gone hand in hand which is why we're seeing such significant interest from brands like Candwall and Relish.
“There's a UGC gold rush happening right now and momo™ provides the perfect platform to enable brands, whether adult or otherwise, to quickly rollout a robust and scaleable solution to take advantage of the rapidly evolving market.”
Jasper Duncombe, CEO, Relish Films added: Adult entertainment has always been extremely lucrative and now, through the Relish / momo™ partnership, we are pleased to be able to offer our consumers the opportunity of creating their own adult content.

Mobile Becoming the Swiss Army Knife Gadget that Users Can’t Live Without, Says Study
A study of users' views of non-voice mobile usage carried out by Buongiorno has found that people increasingly consider their mobile to be a Swiss army knife of camera, games console, music player, TV, emailer and personal organizer. And they want more interactivity from the services they use in the future.
Some 70 per cent want interactive radio stations to listen to while choosing ringtones — which incidentally are still the most popular form of content — while just over 60 per cent want to use their phone to participate in interactive mobile TV shows.
The study has also segmented the 5000 14 to 44 year old people surveyed in 10 countries in three new chatergories.
- Symbiotics — those that have an especially close relationship with their phone who do a lot of personalization. These account for some 48 per cent of those surveyed;
- Rationals — the 25 per cent who appreciate what the mobile can do, but don't like the 24x7 always on lifestyle;
- Fashionistas — the 27 per cent, mostly young, who like to use their mobile to show off with and as a status symbol.

Vodafone and Orange Tie-up with Telefonica Moviles Opens Massive Spanish Mobile Content Market
Following agreements this week between content enabler and biller Bango and Vodafone España and Orange España, the Spanish mobile market has now joined the growing number of countries providing users with full, open access to the mobile internet. Content providers can reach phone users on any network to market and sell content and services directly to 45 million Spanish users as one, unified market. These agreements follow an established deal with Telefónica Móviles España (TME) signed last May.
The relationship between Bango and the three operators means that any Spanish phone user can browse the mobile internet, reach third party WAP sites and pay for premium content directly on their phone bill.
"Spanish mobile operators came very close to launching the Simpay [the aborted mobile payment mechanism stymied in 2006 by lack of operator buy in] mobile brand in 2005," says Ray Anderson, CEO of Bango. "The vision of providing a cross operator, safe mobile payment experience is finally realized by this partnership between the three operators and Bango."
"At last content providers can reach the whole mobile market in Spain, made easy by the Bango platform," adds Ghatim Kabbara, CEO of Safira Solutions. "By making browsing and payment simple, this is an opportunity that anyone with Spanish content should seize."

3 Launches GeekTV — Its First Made for Mobile TV Channel
3G operator 3 UK and mobile media company Player X have teamed up to launch geekTV, the only made-for-mobile TV channel on 3 UK's network.
The channel is a mixture of well-known entertainment brands such as Miami Vice and American Dad, alongside original content and user-generated content that allows 3 UK customers to view the content with an option to download to their handsets.
The channel is updated weekly and is aimed at the all-important 16-to-24-year-old demographic. It is also an opportunity for 3 UK to promote videos that can also be downloaded as individual episodes elsewhere on 3's portal, so mobile users might see an episode of Player X's new Dom Joly show on Geek TV, and then go and buy the others from the portal to download.
The channel was soft launched in the first week of December and its user-generated content is augmented by a geekTV sub-section on 3's popular and ground-breaking SeeMeTV platform. 3 UK customers can send in their clips by texting 3geek to 34335 and the best clips are shown on geekTV as well as receiving prizes. .
Nam liber tempor cum soluta nobis eleifend option congue nihil imperdiet doming id quod mazim placerat facer possim assum. Typi non habent claritatem insitam; est usus legentis

Vodafone and 2Ergo Offer School Kids Text Service to Dob in a Bully
With the new school term underway, the mobile industry has turned its attention to combating bullying. Interactive and multi-channel communications provider, 2ergo, has joined forces with mobile phone giant, Vodafone, have teamed u to launch a programme that aims to provide people, throughout the country, with the chance to secure a state-of-the-art anti-bullying solution for their local school.
Known as the ‘Anti-Bullying Programme', this initiative supports the work of the Anti-Bullying Alliance based at the National Children's Bureau – a coalition of 65 organisations working together to reduce bullying. The 2ergo and Vodafone programme aims to extend the use of 2ergo's anti-bullying and anti-truancy services to every school in the UK. To help achieve this, and raise awareness, the programme is offering 25 schools the opportunity to have ‘TellByText' and ‘2Nc Alert' anti-bullying and truancy applications installed with full-training, free of charge.
Based on a recent report published by charity Beatbullying, a member of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, approximately 55,000 young people truant from school each day as a result of bullying, proving that bullying and truancy are intrinsically linked.
Already in use by a number of schools throughout the UK, ‘TellByText' is a discreet service which enables victims or witnesses of bullying to report an incident or problem to the school with full anonymity and protection. The technology allows them to send a text to the school which is then forwarded by email to a designated member of staff. A discreet text will then be sent back to the victim or witness' mobile with details of what action will be taken.

Strategic Telecoms Pricing and Differentiation Forum 2007
Marcus Evans, 22nd-24th January 2007, London
In the world of wireless and wired telecommunications, pricing is at the heart of the business. It's a real-time competitive issue, and mistakes are expensive. Pricing is a management topic. It is often the most direct expression of business strategy, as it illuminates the product or service proposition, the target market and chosen competitive positioning. Where pricing is inconsistent or in any other way uncontrolled it is often the place where profit haemorrhages.
