Dear Industry Executive,
UK interactive TV in meltdown - is it game over?
Looks
like the premium rate business has done it again. Growing problems with
premium rate based phone and text interaction with TV — the great white
hope for the TV industry and the fledgling steps towards interactive TV
services — have come to a grinding halt in the UK following growing
concern that viewers are being royally ripped off.
As
reported in ContentFutures.com on 21 February, calls to a quiz on TV
chat show Richard & Judy were found to be generating vast sums from
calls being made after the quiz had happened. Then came the news that
calls to a live cookery programme on Saturday morning were being
charged at premium rate, but the show was pre-recorded so callers had
no chance of getting on air.
Now
UK PRS regulator ICSTIS is calling for a thorough review of how these
services are run and UK broadcaster ITV has pulled all its PRS based
interaction — and that includes text voting — while all the
programmes it has shown that use it are independently audited. Who
knows what’s lurking there?
All
this comes at a time when TV companies, mobile service providers and
everyone in the web space is looking at ways to monetise new forms of
television. Across Europe IPTV and IPTV to mobile is starting to do
significant business. Adding interaction to this can only make more
money. But not if everywhere goes down the same route as the UK
market where PRS scams seem to be the order of the day. It only remains
to be seen whether the damage is done. Will consumers come back to call
TV and participation TV services once it has been given a clean bill of
health? Will such services be deemed viable once the ‘extra’ cash
generated from these scams is squeezed out? Only time will tell. Glad I
don’t work in TV this week…
Yours

Med1a first to bring free-to-air IPTV content to mobiles
Internet
based TV is being widely viewed as the future of TV and extending that
to mobile — or to any device — is a key strategic linchpin of the
telecoms industry. And within a week of being set up, IPTV consultancy
and technology enabler, Med1a, is first to market with free-to-air IPTV
content on mobile phones.
All
content from Med1a’s proprietary ‘View TV’ platform will now be
available worldwide, free-of-charge, to anyone with a 3G enabled mobile
handset, in addition to its current availability via the internet at
viewtv.co.uk or set-top-box. This will significantly increase the
penetration of Med1a’s stable of IPTV channels.
View TV is a portal of 900 streaming channels with all connectivity fully managed and monitored by Med1a’s technical staff.
Jamie
Branson, Director of Med1a says, “Consumer behaviour is changing fast
and organisations recognise they need to react to that change. As such,
Med1a is committed to maximising the potential of our clients’ IPTV
offerings by providing access to our View TV platform to as wide an
audience as possible. Now, with the addition of mobile to the existing
web and set-top-box access, we have opened up View TV to an even
broader spectrum of casual viewers. Our first to market move into
mobile distribution is a further demonstration of Med1a’s dedication to
helping our clients maximise the profitability of their IPTV channels.”

UK Social Media company outsources Sky TV channels to leading mobile aggregation and application specialist
Social
networking enabler 4D Interactive is extending its UGC TV channels to
embrace mobile in a deal with Indian mobile company Tanla, which will
see Tanla redevelop 4D’s social networking channels on Sky’s digital TV
platform.
Effective
immediately, Tanla will assume technical ownership of both of 4D's Chat
channels and will assist the company in the development of exciting new
features, content and formats. Tanla will also support the streaming of
both channels to the web and IPTV.
David Lee, Managing Director for 4D Interactive says, "We were the first to offer television-based social networking in the UK
and with this deal we're again preparing to break new ground. The
relationship with Tanla Mobile will improve not only the content and
reach of our channels but will help us deliver even tighter integration
with our mobile, 3G Video and web-based chat services."
"We
are excited by the prospect of becoming 4D's technical partner and
developing its Social Networking channels", adds Gautam Sabharwal,
Tanla's Business Development Director. "Our TV platform has at its core
a flexible, modular and customisable architecture; adapted and
augmented for 4D by our Development Centre in India. Working with an imaginative company such as 4D, who really understand interactive communities is a great opportunity for us"
4D launched Chat Box TV (Sky Channel 874) in 2004, making it the UK's
original UGC channel and the first to offer Social Networking "from the
living room". In February 2007 the company was named to the O2/Real
Business "50 To Watch in Mobile" list by a leading panel of experts.

Cherrysauce adds mobile advertising to its adult offering
Award
winning mobile adult company Cherrysauce, is adding mobile advertising
and marketing capabilities to its TotalD2Cmobile off portal mobile
service in a partnership with leading mobile ad platform AdultModa from
MobVision.
The
addition of MobVision to the existing group of industry leaders gives
Cherrysauce’s TotalD2CMobile complete, comprehensive capabilities in
the mobile adult sector, covering every aspect, from content,
technology, infrastructure and billing through to marketing and
delivery.
MobVision's
Adultmoda mobile marketing service allows advertisers to run highly
targeted mobile Internet campaigns. The system incorporates cutting
edge Ad-Serving and Ad-Management technology built upon years of mobile
experience and expertise. Combined with an off-portal publisher network
delivering over 400 Million WAP impressions per month, Adultmoda gives
advertisers an unrivalled opportunity to reach their target market on
mobile.
TotalD2Cmobile
allows media owners to cut out multiple middlemen and take direct
control and ownership over their mobile D2C business and consumers with
Cherrysauce’s expertise and experience in this specialist sector.
Clients of the TotalD2Cmobile service already include Private Media
Group, Mobshack and Candywall (4D Telecom).
“The
success of TotalD2Cmobile is the combination of our mobile erotic
market expertise and experience combined with the marketing power and
potential of our clients”, says Julia Dimambro MD of Cherrysauce. “
Cherrysauce has been in the D2C market since 2003 and it has developed
very quickly.
Keyword
bidding and search engine channels can quickly become monopolised by a
few players - which weakens the consumer's choice and diversity. The
operators are playing a dangerous game in terms of the long-term
financial benefits within this space. However we see a fresh,
innovative and creative marketing environment being created with the
Adultmoda service and MobVision's mobile adult expertise. They are the
perfect partner for Cherrysauce and its clients to obtain high quality
and targeted traffic from consenting adults looking for these types of
services.”

Tourists get city guides on their mobiles
Tourists around Europe
could soon be getting guides to the cities they are in on their
mobiles. Media group U-Turn is joining forces with Grupo ADI, a large
Spanish content production house, to create interactive mobile tourist
guides. The guides will use U-Turn’s on device portal technology. The
first mobile guide for Barcelona was
launched at this year’s 3GSM event and included interactive maps,
streamed and downloadable video and audio commentary as well as text
descriptions of the most popular tourist sites throughout Barcelona.
Similar
mobile guides featuring key sight-seeing information for London, Paris,
Nice, Madrid, Lisbon, Munich, Rome, Berlin, Prague, Florence, Zurich,
Geneva, Amsterdam and Brussels will be released in coming months.
The
guides will provide consumers with the ability to travel around major
European cities and read, watch and listen to information about points
of interest at their own pace through their ever-present mobile phone.
Bulky travel books and maps are no longer a necessity for the savvy
globe trotter.
Updates
to the guides are performed in real time over the air, so users can
access the very latest information about local events, exhibitions and
cultural events whenever they choose to travel.
“This
is a great opportunity for U-Turn to deploy a pan European service and
to work closely with an established, forward thinking content provider
who is looking to expand into the mobile space,” says Toby Downes, Head
of Marketing at U-Turn Media Group. “The Interactive tourist guides are
another example of U-Turn’s ability to deliver interactivity and
crystal clear multimedia to mobile users.”

MPression.
4th
Screen now offers a turnkey service to mobile publishers, including
sales, billing, adserving, ad creation and a dedicated campaign
optimisation team. This gives the mobile advertising industry a much
needed one stop shop facility, the company hopes.
4th Screen Advertising will offer advertisers access to its significant UK WAP network which boasts some of the UK's

Quick error-free video downloads made possible through Red Bee partnership
Video
content will soon be downloaded more efficiently and corruption-free
through Red Bee Media’s white-label search and navigation tool, Sherpa,
following the signing of an agreement with CacheLogic to add
CacheLogic’s peer-assisted content delivery network (CDN) to its
growing number of supported CDNs on its Sherpa platform. Sherpa offers
a single point of entry for a consumer to find and play video content
on their TV, mobile phone, computer or IPTV service.
CacheLogic’s
peer-assisted content delivery network combined with Sherpa will make
downloading faster and more reliable for consumers. Because
CacheLogic’s charges are asset-based rather than per-gigabyte, the new
partnership will also greatly reduce streaming and downloading cost for
Red Bee Media’s clients such as broadcasters and other platform owners
and rights holders.
Stacey Anklam, Head of Product Management at Red Bee Media tells us that, “Online content revenues in Europe
will increase five fold by 2010, reaching around E8.3 billion. Red Bee
Media is helping our clients take part in this by making sure their
customers can easily find content they’re interested in and making sure
this video content can be downloaded quickly and efficiently through
CacheLogic’s technology.”
Sherpa
enables clients to offer content through an interactive programme guide
that can be customised for a client’s brand and business needs. It also
allows clients to build individual user profiles that feed into the
advanced search, rate and recommend functions, which helps them draw in
customers and keep these users engaged. Read More: http://www.redbeemedia.com/press/2007/cachelogic.shtml
